Help run the farm...learn a lot.

Lewis Creek Farm is seeking an Assistant Farm Manager who wants to learn the business end of Vegetable Farming. This is an entry level management position for someone with some on-farm experience. We grow 40 acres of a wide variety of vegetables and sell them through many market channels. There's a lot of things to keep track of at once. This is a great opportunity for a person who wants own their own farm someday.
The position is a mix of active participation in and analysis of: production, sales, employees and business management.
The ideal candidate is as excited about the jobs that get done at a desk as they are about the jobs that get done in the field.

Multi-year position
This is a multi-year position.
  • There will be a lot of learning in the first year.
  • In subsequent years there will be increasing management responsibilities and the opportunity to implement you own ideas.

    Serious long term potential
    Your management responsibilities will increase as time goes on, subject to frequent performance reviews.
    There is the potential for becoming a partner in the business and possibility of ultimately owning both the business and the real estate.

    Requirements:
  • You have a few years of on-farm experience. Enough to know that vegetable farming is something you want to pursue as a career.
  • You are very self motivated.
  • You are in a position, and of a disposition, to make this career opportunity your primary focus.
  • You are available fulltime year-round.
  • You have the aptitude and desire to work with data and planning and all the office work that is involved with actually managing a farm.
  • Comfortable with Excel.

    Of course you need all the usual qualifications for working on a farm:
  • You need to be in good health, able to lift 50 lbs. and endure extended periods of time standing, bending, stooping, and lifting.
  • You need to be energetic, cheerful and punctual and have a strong work ethic.
  • You must be comfortable working with the public at our Farmstand and at the Farmers' Market.
  • You must have a valid driver's license.
  • You must have some weekend availability, particularly in season. This will be sometimes Saturday, sometimes Sunday, occasionally both. Not every week. We can be flexible
  • You need to be able to commit to a full year, through April of 2023 at a minimum.

    Additionally:
  • Some vacation time available April to November. More December to March.
  • Paid sick time.
  • Some entrepreneurial background would be encouraging to see.
  • You can think of this as a little like graduate school. You are going to learn a lot. You are going to be paid, modestly.

    Compensation:
    The first year you will be paid our standard wage of $15.00/hr. And I will be spending a lot of time with you teaching you about the business.
    In subsequent years you will create a plan of management improvements that will allow for your own higher rate of pay.
