Frequently Asked Questions

Are You Organic?

We are not Organic. We use a lot of organic practices, but we are not organic.
Our use of so many organic methods means over half of the crops we grow get no sprays at all.
Of those crops that get sprayed, most are sprayed with products that are approved for organic production.
When we use a spray that is not approved for organic production, we pick the spray with the lowest toxicity to humans.

Can you really make a living doing this?

People don't ask this as much now that the local food thing is so big, but they used to ask it a lot. My reply is: "Well, I can afford health insurance and I put my son through college. I guess that's making it."

Is it too late to sign up for a CSA?

It is never too late to sign up for a CSA.
We will gladly pro-rate a CSA fee if you would like to start it late or end it early.

What do you mean by "Ecologically Grown"?

We are not Organic. We use a lot of organic practices, but we are not organic.
We adhere to the Vermont Ecologically Grown Guidelines. The net effect of this is that:
Most of our crops receive no sprays at all.
Of those that do receive sprays, the majority get sprays that are approve for organic production.
When we use a spray that is not approved for organic production, we pick the spray with the lowest toxicity to humans.

What's the difference between Sustainable Agriculture and Ecologically Grown?

The term Sustainable Agriculture refers broadly to values and practices that seek to minimize the use of chemicals in farming and keep farming profitable. It recognizes that any system will fail if it is either, undermining the long term profitability, or eroding the ecological underpinnings of the soils and ecosystem of which we are a part. You can't consume either your financial or your ecological capital.
To this end Sustainable Agriculture promotes a more extensive use of practices like crop rotation, green manuring and non-chemical pest control rather than the chemical intensive monocultures of conventional agriculture.

Vermont Ecologically Grown is a set of guidelines created by the Vermont Vegetable and Berry Growers Association which are based on the principles of Sustainable Agriculture. At the time the guidelines were created (late 1990s) it seemed that consumers had a better intuitive sense of word Ecological than of Sustainable.

Lewis Creek Farm has the policy above and beyond the Ecologically Grown Guidelines that provides for complete transparency with regard to pesticide usage. Our Full Disclosure Policy allows you to look up any crop we grow on the Crop List on our website, and find out:
Was this crop sprayed?
If it was sprayed , what was it sprayed with?
Is that spray approved for organic growers to use?
How toxic is that spray?
